In the artist's words

This painting was inspired by the zebras at the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park in Vaal Park, the same park that inspired Giraffe Family.

I started at 11 pm and finished it the next morning at 8:19 am. I couldn’t sleep, and once I got going I was determined to finish it, so I painted straight through the night.

Two of the zebras have their heads down, grazing in long grass painted in rich oranges, golds and greens, while the one in the middle has lifted its head and stands alert, as if it has just heard something. Behind them, large shady trees stand against a pale blue sky and a hazy, sunlit plain. I enjoyed the challenge of the stripes. Every zebra’s pattern is unique, and getting the stripes to follow the shape of each body takes patience.

Acrylic painting of three zebras in orange and gold grassland, two grazing and one standing alert, with large green trees and a pale blue sky behind.
