In the artist's words
There is nothing better than a nice early-morning walk on Strand beach. The Strand is my home town, on the shores of False Bay, and to me it has the best walkable beach and the freshest sea air anywhere. As an artist, it is easy to draw my inspiration from it.
In this painting I looked along the beach towards Gordon’s Bay, with the mountains rising behind the town. Up in those mountains lies the Steenbras Dam. The white apartment blocks along the beachfront catch the morning light, a few early walkers are dotted along the sand, and the waves roll in long lines of white and turquoise. I kept the sky soft and pale and let the wet sand in the foreground pick up the colours of the water and the morning light.
It is a view I see often, but it never gets old.
